Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional system of yoga that encompasses eight branches or limbs (Ashtanga literally means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit). These branches provide a comprehensive approach to yoga practice that extends beyond physical postures (asanas) to include ethical, mental and spiritual development.
Yamas: These are ethical guidelines for living, which promote a harmonious relationship with the world and others. The five yamas are non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, non-excess, and non-possessiveness.
Niyamas: These are personal observances that support inner growth and personal discipline. The five niyamas are purity, contentment, austerity, self-study, and devotion.
Asanas: These are physical postures, practiced for physical and mental health, as well as for spiritual growth. The asanas help to develop strength, flexibility, balance, and focus, and prepare the body and mind for meditation.
Pranayama: This is the practice of controlling the breath, which helps to purify the body and calm the mind. Pranayama techniques range from simple breathing exercises to more advanced practices that involve the control of energy within the body.
Pratyahara: This is the withdrawal of the senses, allowing the mind to turn inward and become more introspective. This stage prepares the mind for deeper meditation practices.
Dharana: This is focused concentration, where the mind is trained to remain focused on a single point or object.
Dhyana: This is meditation, where the mind becomes absorbed in the object of focus and all other thoughts and distractions fall away.
Samadhi: This is the highest state of consciousness, where the mind and self are fully merged and all duality dissolves. This is the ultimate goal of Ashtanga Yoga, and is considered to be a state of bliss and unity with the universe.
In conclusion, Ashtanga Yoga is a comprehensive system that encompasses not just physical postures, but also ethical, mental and spiritual development. By following all eight branches, practitioners can experience a harmonious balance in all aspects of life.
